Hundreds of Lipstick Brands Contain Traces of Lead
A chemical analysis of 400 popular lipstick brands, conducted by the US Food and Drug Administration, has found that all the lipsticks contained lead, a toxic metal linked to severe health problems. The agency says the lead levels are so low that the products are safe, but health groups insist there is no safe level. Producer Zulima Palacio has more.

Study: Levels of Lead in Lipstick Higher than Expected

A new FDA study shows most lipsticks contain higher levels of lead than previously detected. WTSP has the story. "The FDA found lead in most of the 400 lipsticks it tested. Many had twice as much lead compared to the last FDA study back in 2007." L'Oreal leads the pack. Five of its lipsticks ranked among the top 10 most contaminated brands. Others included Cover Girl, Maybelline and Revlon. But a L'Oreal spokeswoman sees no reason for concern -- Bloomberg quotes her. REBECCA CARUSO: "The lead levels we found are within the limits recommended by other public health authorities. L'Oreal maintains the highest standards for safety and consumers can use all of our products with complete confidence." But a Campaign for Safe Cosmetics spokeswoman isn't satisfied with that explanation. ABC News reports on the study's findings, and quotes the spokeswoman. "Children's products in the US cannot contain more than 100 parts per million of lead. The highest offending lipstick contained 7.19 parts per million, [the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics' said.] ... [a spokeswoman said] 'There is no safe level of lead exposure. It builds up in the body over time. A little bit every day is adding up and staying with you." The group argues the FDA imposes no standards for regulating chemicals in cosmetics. But the medical director of Boston's Lead Poisoning ...
